Review: Avatar (aka Dances with Smurfs)

After my bladder has recovered from the 3-hour excursion that is Avatar, I sit down in front of my laptop, trying to gather my thoughts on this movie.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

This movie...is just...GORGEOUS!!!!

Now, as you probably know already, most (if not all) of this movie is computer-generated. From the characters to the bugs to the locales. But DEAR GOD! If I was a few years dumber, I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference! There were times where I was sitting in my chair (with a bladder full to exploding) and I kept thinking "Holy crap! I can't believe that's computer!" Seriously, this is just beautiful in terms of the use of computer graphics. Kudos to James Cameron.

But now, for the actual movie...

...nothing new...

I'm not kidding. The plot...if you've watched Fern Gully or Dances with Smurfs...you've pretty much seen this movie. It's predictable, it's sometimes redundant...there's a big moment near the end that is totally Deus Ex Machina that made me cringe...

But the experience is just priceless. Even though the plot is boring, the overall experience is just awe inspiring. The world of Pandora is just so alive and rich that I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't go back there. In fact, James Cameron may have created his own little version of Star Trek or Star Wars. I predict many hundreds of years of comic books and video games will follow this film.

...that's all I've got, really. It's a great film if even when you get down to the bear bones, it could have done with some work. Some of the characters are so one-sided that they got boring. Even the villain wasn't that villainous to me, even with the scars all over his body. But this is definitely a must see movie if only because it makes history. The graphics are just astoundingly real and wonderful.

Done.
